Picking Paint Colors First The BIG MISTAKE People Make

When I initially meet a client, often the first question I am asked is: What color should I paint my walls? As designers, we study trends and keep samples of our top colors on hand. There are many go-to colors that can work well in diverse locations.

House Lighting Plays a Key Role When Choosing Paint Colors

However, color is light and paint is color. Every home has different lighting conditions that vary throughout the day. For this reason, it is best to choose the paint colors in the light of the home, and to view large, painted samples in various light conditions at different times of day prior to deciding.

Why You Should Choose Paint Color Last During The Interior Design Process

Another key consideration is that paint color is usually one of the very last selections in an interior, later in construction. The other practical reason is there are thousands of paint colors, but only one wood floor you truly love, or the perfect countertop slab that is rare and unique.  These things can’t be changed to match the wall color, so it is much more practical to choose paint after the other material selections have been made.

How Paint Finish Plays a Role

Keep in mind that the paint finish will also affect the color. Finishes range from high-gloss lacquer to low-sheen matte. We recommend matte finishes in almost all residential interior walls because they absorb light rather than reflecting. As a result, the colors appear rich, deep, and glare-free. For baseboards and trim, I recommend going with a semi-gloss finish in the same color as the walls.
