Area Rugs – What Size Should My Area Rug Be?

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to rug sizing. Standard sizes (8x10, 9x12, 12x15, etc.) are often stocked by retailers and wholesale vendors and are available for immediate shipment. Custom rugs have varying lead times from a few weeks for machine-made materials to 6-9 months for hand-knotted or handwoven rugs. Each room size and furniture grouping is different and presents unique challenges. However, some key layout secrets will help ensure your furniture layouts look and feel fantastic.

Key Layout Secrets Will Help Ensure Your Furniture Layouts Look & Feel Fantastic

Living Room Rugs

Ideally, the furniture should all fit on the area rug with a few inches to spare. The size of the room and traffic patterns will influence the size of the rug. Sometimes rugs need to be a little smaller to make room for a walkway or entry into another room. Make sure the area rugs do not unnecessarily impede traffic patterns, and keep in mind areas that are walked over frequently may show wear over time, especially with lower-priced machine-made rugs. You must also consider the size and desired arrangement of your furnishings and where the focal point(s) of the room are located. We provide clients with a detailed scaled furniture plan so you can be sure the sizing of your rugs is accurate before ordering.

Bedroom Rugs

Most king-size beds work best with a 9’x12’ rug. For a queen or smaller an 8’x10’ works nicely. You can size up if the room allows, and custom rugs can be made to accommodate any layout. Take into account the size of the nightstands, and be sure there is enough room around the bed to step out onto the rug easily.

Dining Room Rugs

A good rule of thumb is to allow for three feet beyond the dining table on all sides. That way the chairs can slide back and forth without getting caught on the edge of the rug.

Heirloom Quality Rugs

Heirloom quality rugs often come in unusual or smaller sizes. One of the great ways I like to work with smaller handwoven pieces is to layer them with larger rugs or use them in smaller spaces like entryways or formal powder rooms. We have many sources for rugs in various textures, colors, and materials that can coordinate with the pieces you love.

Custom Rugs

Sometimes standard sizes do not fit properly for a variety of reasons. There are many custom options at various price points and they can be made any size down to the inch. Sometimes there are limitations based on the overall width of the loom the material is made on. For instance, most looms are either 13 or 15 feet wide, so options for larger sizes may be limited.

There may also be limitations for shipping since larger and heavier packages can incur significant freight costs. Custom rugs can be made in any color and pattern imaginable in materials ranging from silk and wool to hemp and sisal.
